Default Past Tense Verbs

I have been thinking and thinking about why students always say verbs in the present when they should be using past tense verbs.

What is this all about? I certainly have never done it while learning other languages. And I have never seen other Spanish or French learners make the same mistake.

Is it an English thing?

I am getting so tired of students only using present tense verbs.

Any ideas? I mean, I have games and speaking activities and all that, but what is the root problem?

"Yesterday I go home at about 4 pm."

I would never say something like that as I learn Spanish or French. Why do my English students do it constantly?
