It starts with a Christmas Quiz - the learners see how many of the questions they can answer. Probably they won't get many right. You then ask them, individually or in pairs, to use their phones to research the background to one of the questions and then to present what they find out to the class. So it's a quiz, webquest and speaking activity all in one.
Don't like students using phones in class? Then do the quiz two lessons before the end, and get them to do the research for homework. The presentations can be done in the last lesson.
