Hang on VS Wait a minute

What is "hang on"?

I always here this word but I don't know it's meaning.

I think that it's sound is like "wait a minute".

Are they the same.

Yes, it means "wait" but it's more informal. You can say just "hang on" or "hang on a minute/moment" etc. You'd use it in conversation with your friends for example. If you were going out to a restaurant the conversation might go something like this :

A : Come on, it's late. We booked the table for eight and it's already 7.45.
B : Hang on a minute - I just want to check that all the windows are closed before we leave.

"Hang on" = wait, right. It's used informally a lot in California.
