When should I use "the"?
 

Hi everyone,

I've got a question about using "the" in the examples below.

"The" Plaza Hotel, "The" Broadway Inn, "The" Peninsula-New York, "The" Hotel Newton
Hotel Chelsea, Hotel Pennsylvania

I read a hotel guide intruducing where to stay in NYC, but I got confused with the names of the hotels. What's the difference between them?

"The" is often used with hotel names, especially if the name comes before the word Hotel (or equivalent), or if the name is used alone - eg I stayed at the Hilton Hotel / I stayed at the Hilton. But it's flexible - if you Google eg "stayed at Hilton Hotel" you'll find plenty of examples. The only time it would be unlikely to be used is if the name is the proprietor's : I stayed at Grey's Hotel in Brighton / I stayed at Grey's. .

When the word Hotel comes first, it's even more flexible. I stayed at the Hotel Newton still sounds more likely to me, but on Google I found plenty of examples without the article, eg Has anyone stayed at Hotel Monaco in downtown Portland?, which sounded fine.
