Does anyone know a good game to practice food counters
 

Hello everyone,

This is my first post to this website. I have gotten many great ideas from it, thank you Eric and everyone else.

I am teaching at a junior high in Japan. Tomorrow I have a lesson with the third year students teaching food counters, a can of tomatoes, a carton of eggs, and such. The third year students have a serious lack of energy and interest in English. But I really would like to get them interested and up and moving USING English.

Does anyone one have a good game for this? I was thinking maybe a shopping game or something, but it doesn't seem all that interesting.

I like the boggle cards for that as well and I just play Go Fish, Concentration, I Need It and games like those with his cards.

In addition to the game mentioned above, you can get your students to guess what you bought at the grocery store recently. You'll have to give them some hints to lead them in the right direction and prevent the game from lasting eternally, but my students usually enjoy it.

BTW, here's a funny story that happened when I was playing this game. I was using a supermarket ad from the newspaper to give my students help guessing what I bought. In the course of guessing, we came across grits and Cool Whip. My student who was Japanese had never heard of these foods, so she asked me what they were. I told her, and the next week in class she told me that she had tried the grits. She said her husband liked them, but she thought they were too sweet. Come to find out, she hadn't exactly understood what I told her, and she had mixed the grits with the Cool Whip. I tried to keep myself from laughing, but I couldn't.

For regular (not food) shopping: what I've also done with 2nd year Japanese students is make cards of their kind of possessions (MP3 player, bowling ball, kimono, purse, baseball mitt, electronic dictionary, etc.) They first play card "families" to learn the vocab, then they make signs with the regular and sale prices. Then half are shopkeepers and half are customers (rotating). They have to pay cash or by check or by credit card. bogglesworld has the shopping dialogue.

So for food: perhaps the students would like to "buy" the actual cards.

Also have them look through the supermarket ads and create a personal shopping list and then work with a partner. the partner would be given the ad and the first student would ask for the items on the list and the partner would have to find it in the ad. Then they could swop places and repeat the exercise.

Where do you get your shopping ads in English? Any good Internet sources? The ones that come to my house are in German.

Seems like I'm having trouble printing it out. I'll have to cut and paste.
It's also an education in the names of grocery stores.
