Spelling Tic-Tac-Toe Game
 

Here's a great game to help kids with their spelling.

Materials
Whiteboard or blackboard or paper or wall, its up to you
9 words that you want to practice

How to play

1. Pick 9 words that you want to practice spelling
2. divide the class into 2 teams
3. draw a tic-tac-toe board on the whiteboard
4. each tic-tac-toe square will have a word in it but don't write the word (hence the spelling side of this game). Instead draw blocks that represent the word. For example, take the word "dog". This word will have 3 boxes, one tall one (for "d") one short square one (for "o") and one tall one, but below the "baseline"(for "g").
5. Next i call on a team to pick one of the TTT squares and try to spell the word letter-box by letter-box. Example, instead of them saying "dog" make them spell it letter for letter. If they spell it like this: "d" - "o" - "k", erase all the letters and let the other team have a try.
6. Once a team successfully spells a word cross out that square with their symbol (X or O).
7. The winning team is the first team to get 3 X's or 3 O's in a row

Tic-Tac-Toe can be a lot of fun for the students. I find if you're playing any kind of game, asking students "How do you spell ______?", then you are just wasting your breath and taking precious moments of practice time away from more of your students. The idea with teaching is to get these kids to talk as much as you can, so in this case the teacher should rotate. Have the students play the part of the teacher, asking the questions. This way you get the students asking and the students answering, and you can sit down and read that magazine that you've been dying to look at. :eek: Just joking about that last part, but I hope you see what I'm saying. Double your kids speaking time!;)

TTT is great for any type of learning - kids and adults.
I use it for saying sentences as well as just the words on the fcs.
Great idea about getting the students to be the teacher.
