Quote rajen4 A lot of interesting websites and ideas. Just curious, how many of you are ESL professionals? or are you web developers with some ESL background? | I made a website in 1996, left the world of computers and became an English teacher, and have now returned with a 1996-level understanding of HTML.

| I work for an elearning company and I help develop a website for them (mainly as a writer and storyboarder rather than a real developer). Of course, we have tons of talent at work. roadtogrammar.com and my other sites are all done by lil old me in my spare time. |

| I had a quick peek at your site. You use a css stylesheet that you apply to every page, but it doesn't have the look and feel of a stylised site. What about hacking apart one of the templates from Download free CSS templates - Free CSS Templates for a more modern style. That's exactly what I did with one of my new sites and I'm pleased with the look. |

I'm curious, though, what exactly makes it feel not "stylised". The use of tables? The rectangular nature of everything?
I'll check out that site with the free CSS stylesheets and maybe do a redesign at some point. Right now, though, I'm trying to integrate some content using wordpress. Eventually, I'd like to have the whole site in wordpress, but it seems that the first iteration will be half and half. Basically, I'm going to use wordpress for the blog, podcast listing and a couple of other sections, while the other pages will exist outside of wordpress. Clumsy, perhaps, but that's how I do things.

| ...I think it's colour clashes and misalignments. I recommend this site: Web Design from Scratch - Free web design course - basics, layout, free tutorials, case studies, how to guides and examples for great tips and especially this page: Web 2.0 how-to design style guide |

| | Re: Do you have an ESL website? Interesting conversation about style. How does MES-English stand up under style scrutiny?
I use both CSS and tables and everything was hand done to some extent. However, I use FrontPage and just copy code here and there, then add in the fine touches I can't get FrontPage to do.
I'm getting more and more into the coding, because those programs automatically change to much when I go to save the file, especially php pages. (It took Eric and I hours of emails back and forth to figure out why things weren't working. More so why I wasn't following orders. Sometimes I have to open the file in a text editor afterwards and fix those automatic changes.) |

| | Re: Do you have an ESL website? Thanks in part to the gentle nudging I received here, I've moved my whole website into wordpress. Now, I think, it looks more web 2.0 (although I still don't really know that that means). Let me know what you think!
Dave

| It has to have stripy lines, a reflective logo and should be permanently in 'beta' |

Seriously, though, I don't get it. I just saw an ESL teacher post that "I plan on having my students do a ton of Web 2.0 - related projects". What the heck could that mean?

What the heck could that mean? | Maybe it means studying JavaScript for AJAX applications. It's not the friendliest language to learn but it might be easier than English. |

| | Re: Do you have an ESL website? Seriously, also, a lot of people don't understand what web2.0 is and they label any old thing as web2.0.
A site is web2.0 if it is community or user-driven or if it allows users to create, upload or share materials. Yahoo Answers is a great example, and it's really useful for student projects.
Confusingly, web2.0 also refers to the design style typically used in these sites (reflective logo etc). So a site may have the web2.0 look, but not the functionality.
BTW, you can get your stripes here: Stripe Generator - ajax diagonal stripes background designer (note the reflective logo and beta tag) |

| | Re: Do you have an ESL website? Ok guys, I am into it now. It took me two weeks just to get it out. Sure I am still at the very beginning. I am counting on you guys who have been in the field for long. I have a new feeling of satisfaction, like having accomplished something after all these years in the classroom. For now it has the look of a beginner but I am willing to learn and to go pro. Just how do I get myself out there and join you all?
Please visit it, criticise it, suggest what I can do, link to it if you want, join the forum, I brought in a few colleagues I know. A few students are enrolled but most of them are my former students in Beijing. I'd highly appreciate your suggestions.
Merry xmas from Denis. http://www.myeverydayenglish.com/welcome/ | |
