Default Going out with your students

Hey all,

I just got back from going out with my uni. freshmen students. They just finished all of their finals and they asked their professor, me, to go out with them. I had such a wonderful time having a few drinks with them and being able to provide them with some unique chances to practice their English OUTSIDE of the un-natural environment they are all to used to - the classroom.

Have you ever gone out with your students? Did you find it difficult to have a good time with them knowing they used to be your students?

Had they continued to be my students, I would have never gone out with them. But, I figured that since they are no longer my students, it would be okay. The whole class loved it.

I have gone out with students before. In my last company I worked with the same students for 2 years and I knew them all very well. We would go for lunch together (extra practice for them or Spanish for me).

I never saw it as a problem, but I think that is just the way I am. I don't like to think of myself as seperate or higher than them...we are all just people.

I can understand. In South Korea, there is a stress on teachers being of a higher status than students. Therefore, things a quite different. The students treat you differently. They even act differently around you.

I wish I could go out with my students but none of them are over the age of 10!
