Smile Hello from California

Good Day to All,

I am looking forward to my new assignment to teach the Newcomer Center for my school. I have worked at a Title 1 school for six years and have taught with as high as 75% ELLs in mainstream classrooms. Now, I have elected to teach in a new program focusing on language acquisition for K-1 beginners. Our population was formerly very diverse with mulitple ethnicities, but has become predominately Hispanic in recent years. I look forward to bridging the communication gap with my new charges. I welcome any wisdom you wish to impart. I feel prepared in some ways and feel as if a novice is so many other ways. Glad to have this forum to consult with as I change my focus this year. Have a great summer.

CelticHeart

Hi Eric,

Didn't mean to be cryptic. ELL is a term for the student designated as an English Language Learner. Thanks for the greeting!

Hi, I'm new to this site, but I'm so glad that I found it! I'm from New York and I teach ells in grades k-5. I too have an extremely diverse population, with newcomers entering the school constantly. This is my second year teaching. In our school we have to push into the classroom and pull our group aside. I do work with one group of newcomers that I pull out of the classroom. I don't know if you have to push into the mainstream classroom, but I find this set up to be difficult at times for a multitude of reason But on a good note, I also work with 25 kindergarden students, who are complete beginners, and they are the best.

Hello Celtic! Any idea what its like for Canadians with no family ties to the US to get ESL jobs there in California? That would be a riot no doubt

Welcome.
By the way, why do you think education bureaucrats keep coming up with new abbreviations like ELL? Is this being clever or trying to hide the low level of accomplishment by so many native speakers of English on standardized exams and essays? Curious about your answer and perspective.
