I lived in France (Montpellier) 15 years! One of the most difficult places I know to get EFL work. France is one of the most difficult places to get a job especially in the "province" not to mention EFL ( Paris and suburds it's OK : about 12 million people !!)As regards "tips" for a newbie I've just thought that being creative is one of them. Students are different. Variety in topics, making them participate in role plays may interest them, quizz, jokes... and sometimes assessment tests , they love being in competition!
( well, my students do !!!)

I agree totally that competition is what makes a class motivated. When I taught one-week contracts in Austrian schools, it made a big difference to make teams at the start and score points for all activities, with a winning team at the end.

| | Re: Hi from France! Although I was teaching writing to American university students, I enjoyed being in Paris for a month this summer. Naturally, I also met some ESL teachers. One university instructor told me that many French companies require applicants to take a TOEIC test leading to great student interest in test preparation tutoring and classes. Has anybody else had this experience in France? How is the TOEIC test? Do you have any recommended texts? | |
