Do you teach anything other than ESL?

Do you teach anything other than ESL?

People are always trying to get me to teach maths and science and all kinds of other stuff.

I teach Communication Skills - how to make effective presentations, how to write effectively, how to interview and be interviewed effectively, issues involved in cross-cultural communication - that sort of thing.

Can you give us more info about Military English please? I have never heard of it but imagine that it has something to do with teaching soliders to say "Freeze! Hands on your head scumbag!" :D

I have never been offered to teach anything other English eventhough that can many different forms with Toeic, SAT etc. I wouldn't mind teaching maths or history. They would be interesting but English is the best one! ;)

Re: Do you teach anything other than ESL?

I've written materials for high level military English for a while now, for a combined forces group involved in buying technological equipment. It's mainly involved researching new developments in weaponry, surveillance and defence equipment, finding materials from the net (it's scary what's out there) and using them to develop the course. You don't have to be an expert because as soon as you raise the topic the students take over and tell you more than you ever wanted to know. (You would not believe some of the things currently under experimentation - and I bet those are only the ones they're allowed to talk about.) In fact searching the net turned up some stuff one of the students had written himself, and I was able to use that for one of the lessons. But you need to find material initially which you can use to form the basis of the language and skills syllabus and to develop activities around.
You can also find materials for Military English here while MacMillan publish a course called Campaign which has a related website that includes links to other military English sites.

Speaking of English for ...

I was once approached to teach English to a group of transexual sex workers, although it didn't come about.

Cue jokes about 'shim' etc...

HI,

as I am German, I have a private student to whom I teach German. He needs business German so I can get away with not teaching grammar which I find extremely difficult as it is sooo long ago since I learned it myself and then not even as a foreign language, of course.

To be honest; I prefer teaching English. Especially as there are hardly any websites with teaching ideas to find on the internet for German.

My uncle actually moved to Germany years ago and teaches English in his free time for extra pocket money. He loves it there.
