introducing a topic
 

I am doing lesson assignment teaching narrow reading.

My subject is food and I have to introduce the topic. My students are 10-12 years old, low intermediate. The students have already had a lesson on these words. My theme is taking them to a restaurant. The words are yogurt, vegetable, milk, fruit, bread, meat, cookies. What I need is ideas to introduce the topic

Maybe you can show them pictures of the various types of food that you mentioned or a picture of people eating in a restaurant (Where are they? What are they doing? What's he eating?...etc). I think because they are only 10~12 year olds you can use lots of big pictures and words and have the students match them up.

This sounds more like food you'd eat at home rather than a restaurant.

Anyway, vocab like this can be introduced thru powerpoint+projector. You could do an image search on google for the various foods and then use powerpoint to project these images on the wall in the classroom.

Also, you could choose various recipes and ask them to guess the ingredients

Yes that was my mistake. I meant to say at the kitchen/sitting room table :D

I sometimes like to introduce new language/concepts in abstract ways, so that the student will have to listen to understand what I was talking about 5 minutes ago. Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't. You could try to elicit what foods they already know/would eat at breakfast?
