New to Phonics

Hi! I hope you guys can help me! I'm having to tutor a 6 year old Chinese boy tomorrow and I'm stuck for what I'm supposed to do. He's starting his primary school education after the summer so his mother wants me to prepare him for it by encouraging him to read more and to develop his fluency and vocabulary. However, she also wants me to help strengthen his phonics. I've had no experience with teaching phonics before because I tend to go for topic based lessons, where I introduce a selection of new vocabulary based on a particular topic, i.e.- 'my family' and then base all the activities and games around the new vocabulary words. - Is it possible to incorporate a bit of phonics teaching into this sort of lesson plan or do I need to completely change it? I really hope not... :(
