Teaching Burmese students???

Hello all! I am a brand new, 1st year ESL teacher in a huge district in Wisconsin. Most of my kids are Spanish speakers and working with them is fairly easy. However, I have a family who just arrived from a refugee camp in Burma. i have 2 sophomores and one 7th grader and they speak no English (obviously) and never attended school. Does anyone have any suggestions for me?? HELP!

Hi Erika!
I help tutor many SEAsians here in the USA. Of course, many of the methods are the same that you would use for Spanish. But getting them comfortable enough to open up and try to learn English can be a challenge. Do they read/write Burmese (Myanmar)? I ask because there are some websites you could print out material from. If you want let me know what you are working on so far and I'll see if I can add anything useful. Feel free to PM me : D

Hi puu_sawn. Can you please post the links you mention? I am currently working with two Burmese students (ages 10 and 8)whose parents have some Burmese literacy. Having the parently involved with their learning would be great! Thanks!
