			<description><![CDATA[Hello everybody,

I have a class that is really keen to learn about "the garden" in english. They are between the ages of 9-11 with quite a good understanding of english. they always get games easily and they seem to understand a lot of what I say. They`re a great class and I want to do a fun class with gardening as the theme since they specifically requested it. Also, we have just learnt about the house and objects in the house so it follows on quite nicely.

I,ve had a look for ideas and found something on the british council website but I think its too advanced for primary learners.
I was wondering if anyone had any suggestions or games to make this topic interesting. There is only a concrete outside playing area, therefore an outdoors activity is out of the question! 

Would really appreciqte qny responses!

			<description><![CDATA[This week I tried out a game with my 3ème euro students that we used to play in my French classes at school and I loved! They seemed to really enjoy it so I thought I'd share it here.

I prepared a short piece of text and printed it out four times on small bits of paper. The text can be about anything - mine had a Bonfire Night theme because I did this lesson on the 5th November, so was teaching them about Guy Fawkes and the Gunpowder Plot.

It was a class of twelve, and I split them up into four groups of three people. I stuck the four bits of paper at each corner of the room. I had the four teams sit apart from each other around the room and assigned each team their designated bit of paper, which is placed at the furthest point from where they're sat.

ie. if the corners of the room are:
AB
CD

The team in corner A is assigned the paper in corner D; the team in corner B is assigned the paper in corner C, etc.

In each team, one member is the scribe and the other two are the runners. The runners have to go to the piece of paper, read as much as they can remember and then return to their scribe and dictate what's written.

The team to finish first, and the most accurately, wins. I gave the winning team sweets, which I think they also appreciated!

It sounds quite complicated now that it's written down like this, but it's very simple and they seem to like it!

If you're interested, this is the text I used (the length is around 100 words, and you could simplify it or make it more difficult depending on the level):

"The History of 'Bonfire Night'

In November 1605 a group of men decided to make a plot to blow up the Houses of Parliament in London. The men were angry about the way Catholic people were being treated in England. The leader of the gang was called Robert Catesby, and the plan is known as the ‘Gunpowder Plot’. The men put 36 barrels of gunpowder in the Houses of Parliament with the intention of blowing up King James I and his court. Guy Fawkes was the man who was going to light the gunpowder and cause the explosion. However, police found out about the plot and caught all the men involved. They were tortured and killed."

So far I have thought of the following ideas...
 

1. Download utube vids of various things and construct why and because around them. 
a. Get the Ss to guess the feeling.
b. Get them to guess why from an ABC choice quiz. 
c. Show the answer.

2. Go to sleep/wake up game and its many variations.

3. Imagination game.
In groups the Ss have to make up their own answers and then get a score based on how interesting or funny the are. For eg. Why are you late? Because...

4. Interview game.
Why do you like (season). Ss have to find and interview 4 students (one for each season) and then ask why they like that season. 

5. Comparisons. Which do you like? A or B? Bring in cookies or chocolate etc. Students have to first guess which one certain teachers like and then we get to hear why they do or don't. Use an iphone to film the teachers saying... I like ---- because... Now let some students try and get the class to guess. Have those students say why in Japanese and get the better Ss to translate into English. 

6. Why are you angry? Because I got married! True or false sentences quiz. Do they make sense?

7. Get students to ask Why Q's to YOU the AET (prepped on a sheet already). They must listen to your answers and write on a sheet in Japanese. JT will check comprehension. Why did you come to Japan? Why do you like this J talent? Why do you like food/TV show etc

8. Show pics of something strange and ask why it's like this. Get Ss to guess the reason why in Japanese. Write the answers on the board in English (with the help of Ss). Then give a print with the same pics for them to write the English.

9. Why do you want to be a doctor? Because I want to help sick people. Get Ss to write down their dream job and why. Jobs already need to have been taught for this to work. 

Okay. these are some ideas to get the creative juices flowing. I'm sure I'm missing plenty, so please add whatever you can no matter how simple.]]></description>

			<description><![CDATA[I spy with my little eye, describing children in the class is the best game I've found for teaching elementry children how to ask and respond to the question who is she/he?

Pre-teach the class how to say 'I spy with my little eye', then describe a member of the class (hair colour, clothes, whether they have glasses etc). The first child to guess correctly and answer in a full sentence comes to the front and describes one of their classmates. 

After the first couple of minutes the class can play this almost completely by themselves, they all speak and have to be persuaded to leave the classroom at the end. Another bonus is that they correct themselves pretty sharpish if they get he or she mixed up as none of their classmates will put up with being labelled as the wrong gender.]]></description>
