Re: fluency versus accuracy

At elementary level I focus the language learning on accuracy. The students don't have enough language to worry about fluency.

I continue this through pre-intermediate level and then start...

What makes a good teacher / What makes a good learner?

Two questions for you -

What are the essential qualities that make a good teacher? And how can we develop these in ourselves.

What are the essential qualities that make a good learner? How can we...

Re: What's your favourite song to use in the classroom?

One of my favourite songs to use in the classroom is Lou Reed's 'Perfect Day'.

It's a great song and if nothing else I enjoy listening to it.

This song works well as part of a theme based lesson...

Re: Reading - a great way to improve your English

Hi Jeremy,

I don't regularly use readers in class, partly because using a reader can be time consuming and partly because the national group I teach have a very poor reading habit in their L1 and...

Re: How do you determine whether a class was a success?

I agree with you Sue, there needs to be a balance between the entertainment factor and the learning - although personally I've always found learning to be very entertaining in itself.

But as...

Re: Tips for teaching hard of sight child

Hi g-cogle,

I've taught an autistic student just once and it was extremely difficult.

There are different levels of autism of course, but the basics are that autistic students have a problem with...

What's your favourite song to use in the classroom?

I'd like to teach the world to sing!! But first we have the English language to get through!!

What's your favourite song to use in the classroom? How do you use it - just sing along together or...

Re: Favourite textbook?

For sure I think there's no perfect textbook, they all have strengths and weaknesses but for me I like the Headway series. It's meaty and easily developed for greater application and extension.

Re: Which language level do you most like teaching?

Upper-intermediates do it for me!

They provide a great opportunity to start looking into some nitty-gritty grammar, with lots of deductive comparative grammar presentations.

They can also start...

Re: How do you determine whether a class was a success?

Oh, good question emile!

Certainly, I'm only too aware of the classes which weren't a success!!

For me a class is a success if I've achieved my lesson aims, the students have advanced their...

Re: teaching vocabulary

Hi Williejean,

I guess that if you're presenting basic food items your students must be at a lower level.

Eliciting vocabulary meaning is an acceptable way of presenting vocab. but at a lower level...

Re: fluency versus accuracy

Yes, I agree with you - the decision we must take as to accuracy over fluency in our teaching does depend on level.

It sounds like you've got it 100% spot on with lots of talking and lots of fun. If your...

Re: Showtime!

Yeah, the old Mr. Bean shows are fail-safe.

One of the many ways in which I use them is for speaking practice of present continuous.

Put students in pairs. Student A sits with their back to the TV...

Re: Showtime!

With my advanced classes I show 'Four Weddings and a Funeral'

It fits in well with a lesson on wedding vocabulary, e.g. bride, groom, reception, toast, bouquet, etc.

First I present the vocabulary...

Which language level do you most like teaching?

A little while back Eric asked us which age group we prefered teaching and it generated some good discussion and interesting comments.

Following on from this I've got another 'which do you...

Re: What age group do you prefer?

I agree with you completely Simplyesl - the way to teach adults is to do exactly the same as you would with kids, but just don't let on!

With regards to a teaching ‘approach’ or methodology we need to turn to the wonderful research the university linguistic departments have done into language acquisition.

Those in the know have...

Seems to be getting worse every minute Eric and I would question whether it's actually possible to teach a mixed nationality group at such different levels. Sounds like your school needs to step in...
