How about giving each student a card when they arrive. On each card is half of a famous pair and during the evening they have to find their 'partner'. eg Oliver and Hardy, Anthony and Cleopatra, Tom and Jerry, Mork and Mindy, Will and Grace, Napoleon and Josephine, Sid and Nancy, Lennon and Macartney etc.
