wendy3 is on a distinguished road
Default the past perfect tense

A sentence:

"he told me that I won that day."

of course the meaning is clear: winning precedes telling.

I read a book written ten years ago by a university teacher, and he said the sentence is informal spoken English; the sentence, he added, to be correct in written English, must be rewritten as:

"he told me that I had won that day."

Do you think this rule regarding written English is, if ever, still correct?
