Default still

Hi,

1."Clare didn't do much work, but she still passed the exam."
2."Clare didn't do much work. Still, she passed the exam.
3."Clare didn't do much work. She still passed the exam.
4."Clare didn't do much work. Despite this, she passed the exam.

Do the four sentences above mean the same?

Can I use 'still' in the sentence to mean despite this?
She worked hard. Still, she failed the exam.

Thank you.

Yes, it can be used. People can understand the meaning of the sentence.

Those 4 sentences have very similar meanings. Putting "still" first feels a little more emphatic IMO.
