Default Missing Korea

Hi

I'm missing Korea.

I just thought I'd say that.

I was in korea for 2 1/2 years, finally I left and I have missed it as well. I try to focus my energy on other things so that I don't think about it everyday. Actually I try to remember the small number of negative experiences I had so that i'm not tempted to go back. I greatest thing is that now I assist Koreans coming to Canada for study and I have many contacts as well as reasons to return to Korea in the future!

I left in September after 5 years. There are some specific things that I miss - korean food, expat social scene, $$$, but I don't miss Korea in general at all. If I found a good Korean restaurant here and got a higher paying job, I wouldn't miss Korea at all.

When I'd been home on previous vacations, I missed Korea and after 2 weeks and was always totally ready to head back. At the start of my 5th year as I was returning from vacation in Canada, I was not happy to be coming back, and that's when I started to realize that maybe I'd had my fill. If you're missing Korea, maybe you weren't ready to leave.

It's really tough to tell when you've had enough. Now that I think about it and have settled back into Canadian life, I think it was more of a reverse culture shock, as opposed to "missing korea".

i think chocopie hit the nail on the head. If you visit home and you miss a place, you might not be ready to stay home. But if you can be at home and not long to be back, you are probably ready to make a clean break.

Test the waters by taking yearly trips home and gauge how you feel...

Korea is a strange place - when I'm here as I am now I am fairly apathetic towards it but when I leave I have to say that I miss the place. I mean lets face it - there aren't that many places on earth where we can earn relatively good money / have a good lifestyle and still pocket a substantial amount in the bank. Ok it's not the most beautiful country in the world and does have lots of 'quirky' sides which may be viewed as some to be negative but it allows me to work for a year and then go sun myself in Thailand for 3/4 months at a time.

Now - I could never do that when I was a hard working stressed out member of the western rat race!

It's a good point. Korea has it's ups and downs. On my honeymoon I went to Europe and decided to try some Korean food (I live in Korea where I am surrounded by it) but was very disappointed by it. It was damn expensive and I wouldn't mind that as it's not popular there but it didn't taste the same. I think that I will miss the food the most.

You're absolutely right! In the whole of the North of England (correct me I'm wrong) there is only 1 Korean restaurant called Koreana in Manchester. It's very over priced and since living in Korea for a number of years I know realise that the 12 course menu consists basically of a side-dish for each course!! Now that is cheeky - ha ha..........
