Re: Slangy Slang Slang

Thanks for your thoughts on the topic! I guess I was really just interested to know how other people approached this. I had some success in the past teaching slang greetings and farewells as a first...

Slangy Slang Slang

Hi! I'm trying to brainstorm ways to teach slang to my high schoolers, but am not coming up with any ideas that sound like any fun. Has anyone taught slang in their classes before and found a...

Re: Kings – A grammar game!

Wow, Kings! I feel like there are a lot of drinking games that can be re-imagined as learning activities. Thanks for taking the time to share these rules-- I think my high schoolers will get a real...

Re: An intermediate activity!

I was in a private class when we did this, so the groups were only 3 students each. It should be manageable up to 5 as long as everyone has a job or some sure way of participating. Just imagine when...

Re: Show and Tell gets them talking

Agreed! It's really great for older students too, to ask them to bring in photographs of a vacation or something special. My students have always been very enthusiastic about describing the pictures...

Re: Teaching the l and r sound

Just to add a few points, the reason that Japanese students can't hear the difference is because to them there is no difference. All the folks in Japan probably know this very well by now, but I just...

Re: Listening Activity for Adults

Hi Karen! Thanks so much for sharing your insights as a student. It's been too long since I've participated in any listening activity like this, so it never occurred how helpful it could be. Some...

Re: Games for adults?

Thanks, guys, for your suggestions! So far I've only had a chance to try the listening exercise and that turned out to be a fine lesson. Mostly what I've been doing with them until now has been to...

Re: ideas

How much do they already know about Christmas? Do any of them already celebrate it?

If they're interested in making conversation, they'll probably also be interested in seeing your pictures. If you...

Games for adults?

Hi! One of my classes is an adult class of about 30 students that meets three times a week for 2-3 hours. Their English ability varies from those who can converse with ease, to those who have trouble...

Re: Tips for teaching pronunciation?

Absolutely! I had a group of 8th graders for a one-week summer "camp" last year, and one day I took out a chunk of time just to deal with pronunciation. Basically, I'd been taking notes the whole...
