The point is that in Russian (our native language) both of the tenses are expressed the same way - PAST. We have only one past tense. To show them the difference between Past Simple...

I really like the game and I 'll use it, but doesn't it drill "They have been doing smth", rather than "They were doing smth"? My students are so picky!
