Susan - I think i agree with you that it's the "be able to" that might have made me look at the sentence as funny. I've found quite a few times that the sentences this...

I had a student present me with this sentence:
"I was able to find Jeff at once."

The sentence strikes me as odd. I would say:
"I was able to find Jeff immediately." or
"I was able to find Jeff...
