Re: Do we seminars for ESL teachers in Asia?

I saw a quote from an architect (here (http://www.beijingnewspeak.com/2007/06/12/thousand-cities-one-face-the-third-round-of-havoc/)) talking about architecture, but I think it applies to education,...

Re: Where can an ESL teacher get the best pay package?Tokyo, Beijing, Seoul,

If your goal is to make money, why not go to the Middle East?

Re: Do we seminars for ESL teachers in Asia?

There are many, many other big loopholes in China's education that they should probably take care of first, though.

Re: Do we seminars for ESL teachers in Asia?

The suggestion to join local organizations is good, but I believe Denis is in China, like me, where there isn't one. As far as I have found, there isn't a Chinese equivalent to JALT or KOTESOL. ...

Re: Blogs

Great topic! Unfortunately, I can't see the blog as blogspot is blocked here in China, but I'm also interested in bringing blogs into the classroom. I also really like the Youtube and Yahoo Answers...

Re: How to make a Student Progress Speaking Test

Maybe I'm misunderstanding something, but it seems very strange to me to test speaking ability if you're not giving them opportunities to speak during the two month course. Krashen or not, tests...

Re: Where can an ESL teacher get the best pay package?Tokyo, Beijing, Seoul,

Might I suggest adding Taipei into the mix? I certainly made a lot more money (after expenses) in Taiwan than I do in China. I knew many people (myself included) who were able to live quite well...

Re: Would you live overseas forever?

My 2 cents:

I could very well spend my life living overseas (meaning not in America) but there is no way I'm going to spend it in China (where I'm currently living). I am no great fan of China. ...

Re: How do you motivate students who know you have already graded them?

Why do you do it that way?

I realize that I'm not answering your question, but I'm really curious. It seems like a horrible situation for teachers. At my school, students have to wait until after...

Re: The red one it is.

Unsurprisingly, I agree with Sue. I would call "the red one" the subject. There is no way that I could explain it nearly as well as she, though!

Re: Have you ever been embarrassed while teaching?

Emile, your post reminds me of something that happened to me last week. I wanted to show a movie, so I requested the multimedia room. I unlocked everything, and got the projector and computer all...

Re: What do your classes do that drives you mad?

Sometimes, when I tell a student to stop talking on their cellphone, they nod and then simply lower their head (without ending the conversation). Many of the students seem genuinely surprised (dare...

Re: Cinderella, you shall go to the ball!

Mark's post about fireflies and lightning bugs has got me thinking - do any American's use "shall"? I almost never do. I think I would only use it in mock formality (as in "shall we?"). Opinions?

Re: lightning bug or firefly

I'm an American, from Boston originally, but also St. Louis. I say firefly, but folks in St. Louis *might* say lightning bug.

Re: Course books

What's 'Move' like? I'm not familiar with that one. In adult courses, I've used Interchange, Passages and Side by Side (for beginners). Is Move anything like those? I realize you are probably...

Sorry to go off on a tangent, but...
I know this isn't really what we're talking about, but...

Anyways. Hope this helps.

Re: HOw many teachers make friends with thier students?

I don't really make friends with my students. I guess I'm leery of spending time with them outside of the classroom lest charges of favoritism come about. With approximately 400 students, there's...

Tips for a weeklong course for highschool English teachers

Hi folks,

I have a new, short-term job coming up. I've been coerced into teaching some Chinese middle school and high school teachers. It'll be 17 hours for just 1 week. I've received absolutely...

Re: Have you ever been embarrassed while teaching?

Hmm...

I'm not really sure how to answer this one. On one hand, I feel like I must have been embarrassed countless times. On the other, nothing springs to mind. I'm sure I've had my zipper down,...

Re: "Thuh" or "Thee"

I agree, but I don't personally follow that rule. I'm not sure if it's a regional thing (I grew up near Boston) but I say THUH almost exclusively.

Re: Wrapping things up

I love the murder mystery idea! Unfortunately, with 50 students per class, I don't know if I could pull that off.

One game that I've used with adult students is "I've never..." Basically, students...

Re: Are people speaking better English these days?

Well, the state of English (and of English teaching) here in China is pretty bleak, although it is probably "better" than it was before. I don't think I need to worry about being phased out anytime...
