They are both correct but different.

Diagnosis is the naming of a disease by a doctor given the signs and symptoms.

A diagnostic test is a test the hospital runs to get the information they need to make a diagnosis or rule out a diagnosis.

Does that help?

I was thinking in educational terms. Is there such thing as a diagnosis test? Or should I say diagnostic test? Are both correct? I mean the test at the beginning of a unit/year.
Thank you so much!

Diagnostic is the adjective while diagnosis is the noun. So you would do a Diagnostic Test but (in ESL) could also talk about it as being a Language Diagnosis. I tend to use the two terms interchangeably.

Would a 'language diagnosis' deal with a medical, physical, or mental capacity problem? Same for 'diagnostic test'?

Both would seem so to me.

Why does it have to be a problem? doesn't "diagnosis" just mean "finding out how things are" ?? From the Greek "gnosis", knowledge. Problems, like beauty, are sometimes in the eye of the beholder .... )
