Default Games that can be played sitting down

Hi everyone,

I'm currently teaching primary school kids in Taiwan. I've got one particularly energetic class who love getting up and running around two much. I've had three cases of students colliding and hurting themselves in the last month. I'm looking for some good warmers and/or drilling games that can be played with all or at least most of the class in their seats. Can anyone help? Thanks

Hi,

There are lots of games that can be played sitting down, depending on what you are teaching:

1. Hangman for drilling the alphabet
2. Relay races where an object is passed down a row instead of the normal running relay race, eg: if you are working on adjectives you can get the first child in each row to write down a sentence on a piece of paper like "I like chips". The first child must pass the paper back to the child sitting behind him, who will add an adjective to the sentence like, "I like greasy chips". The second child can then hand the paper to the third child behind him who will add an adjective like, "I like fat, greasy chips" and so on until every child in the row has had a turn. The first row to finish is the winner
3. Broken down telephone for speaking exercises

Hope this helps!

Sounds like some rowdy students! You can have them play pictionary or have just two students come up to the board at a time to compete on vocabulary word definitions. You could write a sentence up there and have the two students compete to correct the grammar. As long as the class knows that there is a possibility that they can get up, they usually are pretty attentive. Tell the rest of the class that the next two students to come up are the ones who stayed in their seats.
