Talking Hiya butties!

Hi all! Well, (at the risk of sounding like a student on the first day in the EFL classroom..) my name is Nina. I have two cats..etc etc... I'm an EFL teacher at Coleg Glan Hafren in Wales, teaching English to French and Spanish kids. It's great fun, if a bit I did the same job last year in this summer school and organised activities for the kids in the afternoon...bbq's, bowling, big London/Oxford trips etc. We're planning an English language based concert at the moment and my class is performing a scene from Men in Black, so I'm up to my eyeballs making alien masks!

Hi Nina,

My reply is so late. Oops. Had a very long summer vacation.

Your school sounds very fun. I have done a short play with my ESL students only once in my life and I thought I would die of stress. How did the Men in Black performance turn out? Any tips using drama in the ESL setting?

Nice to meet you.
Karen

Hi Karen.

Nice to hear from you! Did you have a good holiday?! Men in Black worked out really well, thanks! We had performances from every class from elementary through to Upper-Int. We had plenty of time to prepare beforehand. I first held a brainstorming session during a themed lesson on fame/music etc. Then I used the internet in another lesson to explore lyrics and bands. The students drew up profiles and presented them with samples of their music and made a decision about which songs they were going to perform. The next few lessons were spent learning lyrics (which makes for a brilliant lesson on pronunciation and another on slang!) and planning choreography. The final lesson was made up of us deciding on costume (a great opportunity for some really creative designing and vocabulary!)

What was the play you did? I love drama in the classroom! So much fun!

Nina

Default Drama

Hi again,

Sounds like you had things quite well organized!

When I was teaching grade 3(ish) beginner level kids at a winter English camp we had to do a final drama presentation for the parents. As I recall, we had to write our own scripts (or find appropriate ones, which seemed harder for the age group and level we were working with).

Sooooo, I chose to re-write Hansel and Gretel , adding, for the sake of humour, parts for a cameraman/ director duo who yelled "CUT" and rearranged the actors on stage, etc (well, it was funny to me). The final product was cute and fun but would have been a lot more fun with a little more time and less pressure to be brilliant for the parents. My favourite, I think, was the nice candy house we all coloured and glued together. Yum!

Aside from this big, special project I don't really find time to squeeze in drama projects, but I wish I did. They can be really fun, with the right group of students .

Bye for now,
Karen
