        Re: dictation       I've used dictation a lot of different ways in my lessons, but I'll limit suggestions to two that may prove helpful to you.   
One: Depending on the number of sentences given, you can present a short and simple story.  Talk about your last vacation, for example, or what you did last Saturday.  Because the sentences aren't random, but better mimic real conversation, comprehension is usually a bit higher.   
Two: Provide part of the sentence, and dictate the second portion (or vice versa).  With part of a sentence, comprehension rises because students have some expectations about what you will say.
