I taught Beginning High for about 3.5 years. I think it's a good idea to spend the first 1-2weeks on activities which are not too hard for the students, but also will let you see what skills they have in listening, speaking, reading, grammar, writing and vocabulary. Are the students adults? How many hours a week do you have them? Did you try any icebreakers?
