Question Your very first class...

Do you remember your very first class?

How did it go? Were you nervous or excited? Well prepared or did you wing it?

I remember mine. After my 2 weeks of training with my new company I was thrown into the deep end with 37 hours of classes a week at a cell phone company. Boy was I in for some hard work.

I remember getting dressed that morning and worrying about what to wear; trying to present my self as professional but comfortable all at the same time. I had 6 adults in my first class (these were all adult classes) and I remember being so nervous. But once we started it went really well.

It was a hard job to start off with though, with so many hours, but I think I am a better teacher now because of it.

Oh man, I'd much prefer to NOT remember it. I had barely any experience teaching EFL. I was just handed a book and thrown in to the wolves! I remember being really nervous about the whole thing. Now, I just walk in and do my thing. After 5 years, I pretty much have it down-packed.

I'll never forget the first book I used: Up and Away

What a terrible book for what I was teaching.

Yes, teaching for the first time can be daunting. You have done your training; you have your Certificate to prove you are prepared; you have passed the job interview and got the job! And yet you feel somewhat tense, a bit insecure, excited of course, but mainly SCARED! It’s normal.

This ICALwiki article has useful tips on how to cope with nervousness and anxiety, and fight those first time jitters. Learn here how to relax and learn techniques that will help you enjoy your first time teaching.

In the moment it was pretty scary, teaching my first class, but now that I back it wasn't so bad.
