Re: adult students - first impressions count

I'd go for the name tags. It's a business english class, so chances are they already have or will at some stage go to conferences and seminars where name tags are the norm.

Re: Termination of Employment

Sorry to hear you're having trouble.
You're doing the right thing so hang in there.

If it's any help I had a problem with an employer a couple of years back. As soon as I mentioned that I'd spoken...

Re: Happy Birthday Eric!

All the best, fella.

Instead of going out and indulging yourself in hedonistic pleasures, why not stay at home and prepare a thorough plan for the coming year, looking to build on the positives of...

Re: First lesson of the New Year

Surprisingly I've never really felt like that before, certainly not since I've been a teacher anyway. It's slightly worrying that so far this week I've got no desire to teach whatsoever - I hope it's...

Re: First lesson of the New Year

That's great. especially the keywords idea - i'll be using that most Mondays in fact as a way to find out about the weekend.

I'll try all the ideas in any case.
Thanks a lot Susan - you've just made...

First lesson of the New Year

Happy New Year to all.
Right, that's the pleasantries over with, down to business.

Re: What'd ya do?

I was in the mountains of sardinia freezing my little socks off. To compensate I ate and drank as tradition dictates.

"A little wine, a little cheese, a brutal game of Scrabble... I'm officially...

Re: Is am are OR Am are is

Happy new Year to you.

Re: Christmas Show

So here's how it went.

Badly.

The little girl who didn't have any toys wasn't allowed to play with the other kids. So she was sitting on a rock feeling sorry for herself. The animals of the...

Re: Too Good to be True or an Honest Proposal

Good work fella!

No, you're right. Still wet behind the ears Tefl teachers could well get taken in by that. Like you say, they should check out the school beforehand, post notices on forums asking...

Re: Too Good to be True or an Honest Proposal

Now we're getting our humour wires crossed. I was joking too!!!
It was funny.
It must be something to do with the different time zones \ delay etc. A bit like the TV interviews with the old sattelite...

Re: Too Good to be True or an Honest Proposal

Don't worry about that. As I already said, when you put it through Google there is a search result which comes up with a scam warning. Don't touch this offer with a bargepole!!!
They will ask you to...

Talking Christmas Show

This is for those of you who have organised or worked on preparing the kids for the Christmas show.

Re: Too Good to be True or an Honest Proposal

OK, so maybe it was a bit harsh. Especially when you consider I work in MY school!

Anyway, we've just had the final run through for the Christmas show with the kids and it's cheered me up no...

Re: Too Good to be True or an Honest Proposal

If you run that text through google you'll see it comes up with a scam warning.
I'm afraid it does seem too good to be true!

Maybe it'd be more realistic if it said the photocopier never works, the...

Using the TV in class

Does anybody use videos or DVds in class as a teaching aid. If so, which ones and what for?

I like the old Mr Bean sketches. They're short and funny. Even though there is no spoken English I use it...

Re: How do people celebrate Christmas holidays in the country you are teaching in now

It's a big family thing here in Italy.
Christmas Eve is spent at home with the family - it's probably more important than Christmas Day itself. There is a huge meal of meat, fish etc. This is also...

Re: HOw many teachers make friends with thier students?

It's nice to keep in touch, purely for frienship's sake.
On a more cynical note, it's also nice when you have ex-students who are lawyers, dentists, doctors, accountants, mechanics, plumbers etc etc....

Re: How do you relax after a hard day's work?

In the summer it's the beach for sure. We're a five minute walk from Poetto, Cagliari's famous 10k stretch of sand. There for an ice-cream or a bottle of cold beer.

In the winter, ie now, it's dark...

Re: 60, 90, or 120

Wow - 15 minute lessons! I've never done them that short. I don't mean this question to sound rude, but what is the point of that? What did they expect you to achieve in such a short time?

With my...

Re: What level of English should a non-naive teacher have?

Here at the university the non-native speakers teach up to and including pre-intermediate (we follow Headway to give you some idea of the level). Many of them have followed advanced courses with me...
