Re: dealing with swear words

That's great! I can't wait for it to happen to me again. I will do this for sure.

Re: dealing with swear words

Yes, I agree. Probably too young for swear words in any language. I probably wouldn't even have admitted that I knew what it meant as by refusing to translate it you may have aroused their curiosity...

Re: First Day Of New Class

For the first lesson I usually use a sheet with 16 photos of famous people on it. I get the student(s) to write the names of the people and then from that I can ask the same question 16 times -...

Re: Another infinitive question

Hi there,
I'm afraid I can't help with the grades thing, but I can explain a couple of the infinitives used in your examples.

"I use a computer to play games." - this is an example of the...

celta interview

Hi everyone,
This post is on behalf of a friend who is having trouble with the internet, hence the reason I'm doing it.

She's about to have a Celta interview by phone and would like to know if...

Re: Something of a Problem Student

A problem indeed.
Someone once advised me to give the problem student a clearly defined assistant role during activities, eg in a vocab game she is the one who checks the others are following the...

Re: My Celta interview couldn't have been worse :(

hey, don't worry too much. it's great that you're concerned about how it went as it shows that you're genuinely keen on doing the course. However, the score on the grammar test isn't really that...

Re: America vs. US?

Sounds like your doctor has other issues, Eric!

For what it's worth, I'm English and say 'America' when I mean The USA. Otherwise I use South America, Central America or Canada to refer to the...

Re: How many real hours can you teach a day?

I teach 9 hours on a Monday, then 10.5, 8, 9 and 8.5. It's a lot and I feel knackered at the end of the day. However, I jealously guard my weekends and have always refused to do anything other than...

Re: Plural of "Equipment" is...?

It's news to me too.

I've never used equipment in the plural form, and several sporting equipments sounds horrible.
I think a variety of equipment probably best conveys the idea of plural in this...

Re: one on one with a seven year old

We listen to The Wiggles a lot. The songs are fun and the kids love it - especially my daughter and she's only 2!

Here's the link to their site:
The Wiggles (http://www.thewiggles.com.au/)

Or you...

Re: one on one with a seven year old

Don't mention it. I'm delighted that it went well.
That's why this site is so great - I've been given so many ideas by the members. It's a great example of a community pooling ideas to improve our...

Re: Are examinations a true test of knowledge?

really annoyed. I don't think exams are a fair reflection of ones ability - maybe I wasn't clear in my previous post.
I work in Italy, and here the student is expected to regurgitate facts and ideas...

Re: Correct usage

There's not much context to go on, but I'd say it depends on what you want to say.
1. You could have multiple presentations on a single scholarship - scholarship presentations
2. a single...

Re: Are examinations a true test of knowledge?

I don't think so.
A student who understands how the exam is structured and what the examiner is looking for will almost always score better than a student of a reasonably higher level without the...

I had trouble (in) finding.

I think, and I could be wrong, that to have trouble takes 'in' as a collocation, and therefore any verb after it would be the -ing form.

Hope that helps.
