Re: Game ideas for 2 students - HELP!

Many of the adult ESL games will also work with teens, if the games are flexible. Card games are definitely possible.

Re: Help needed with mixed level Jr high / high school class

Ask the school to order a set of multi-level ESL books for you. There are some multi-level texts out there.
Also, try to get a book written for teachers with tips on teaching a multi-level ESL class.

Re: 8 year old who can't understand sentences...

This is wonderful!!! Another example of success because of hands-on activities!!
What if you take it up a level and use color-coded tiles or cards? Examples: verbs are green, nouns are blue,...

Re: Motivating Adults to Speak

I think you should find out about how men and women do and don't interact in their culture. Maybe there are some practices or customs that are influencing the students.
Do you have any pairs of...

Re: 8 year old who can't understand sentences...

While I agree that many words break the rules of phonics, there are many words that keep the rules of phonics. A student who is not equipped with phonics will be unable to sound out even the words...

Re: Board games in large classes

I look at it differently. When my students play board games, I divide the class into groups of 4. Each group of 4 plays independently. This method works very well for adults.

Re: 8 year old who can't understand sentences...

Definitely try hands-on activities!!! Some people are hands-on learners, and they need kinesthetic activities. I also agree that the girl needs to learn phonics.

Re: Freelance teacher's bag!

I don't use a laptop during class time. My laptop is too valuable and I don't want to be concerned about safety. I create my lessons in the laptop. After a term ends, I look at all its lessons and...

Re: First lesson & level testing for adults!

Adults may be interested in computers, or afraid of computers. At my adult school, we get both kinds. You can take adults to ESL websites on the internet that you have screened beforehand. Some...

Re: Freelance teacher's bag!

I use a computer heavily. I try to update my notes in the computer within 24 hours of the class meeting.
My computer is highly organized with folders, subfolders, sub-subfolders, etc.

The categories game works very well in teams. I have used it. Every time a team plays, there is a time limit.

Re: Help needed with mixed level Jr high / high school class

Did you talk to your director about this? No director should put a teacher in a situation like this! You should ask the director to take some of the students out.
No novice teacher should be...

Re: Intermediate Level Tutoring

First of all, don't expect a lot. Two hours a week is very, very little. My school used to have ESL classes that were 15 hours a week (and the classes covered all the skills).
You will need to...

That depends on how many parts the activity has. When I gave students a scenario for a role play, made them responsible to write the script and show it to me for correction, then rehearse it, then...

How long did the role play last? When I give students a role play, and they write the script, the activity takes at least 1.5 hours.

Re: help, please?

I'd focus on activities that last 15-30 minutes, because you don't want the students to get bored. If my students do composition or reading, they may need an hour or more. But for other activities,...

A baby kangaroo is a joey. A baby sheep is a lamb. A baby cat is a kitten. A baby chicken is a chick. "Cub" is for a baby bear, lion or tiger.
A pony is not a baby horse. A baby horse is a colt.

Re: Help: in dire need of songs for kids to practice can can't

There was an old song that went, "Anything you can do, I can do better; I can do anything better than you; No, you can't; Yes, I can..." I'm sorry but I don't know the name of the song.
