I wonder how you go about teaching the past tense forms of irregular verbs AND getting students to use them instead of coming up with some kind of sentence of the type : " I go to school...

I've taught both English Files and New English Files. I would recommend the latter, even though the old English Files were excellent books too.
The New English Files also have a CD ROM for students...

IELTS exams

I wonder if anyone has prepared students to sit for the IELTS exams? They are supposed to be exams allowing students to do post graduate studies in English speaking countries.

I think we read it "Thee" if the following word starts with a vowel,eg we say "thuh" sea, but "thee" ocean.
Of course we also use "thee" for emphasis.

WOW. 50-60 kids in the classroom!! I wonder how you do it. Really. One of my 8-year-old classes is made up of 16 students and I have to really struggle to keep them on track and not have them walk...

I'm with Susan too. When students understand that there is no singular form of the second person and we only speak politely in the plural other things are easier to explain, like " was" (singular)...

My answer is a hole. When you dig a hole, the more soil you take out the bigger it gets, the more soil you add the smaller it gets.

Grammar is not essential in teaching English I feel. I don't think that students learn how to speak if they know the names of tenses. Teach them however that they need this specific form to say this...

The Cambridge Exams play an important role in my working day. The backwash from those exams is a good one I think. They encourage students to read extensively which leads to "absorbing" the language....
