Re: Who or what?

I meant like an established company, or an institution, or a group. :)

Re: What is "You know" in many sentence?

I hate how people use "you know" very frequently, just as others would use "uhm" or "ah" or "like." Why can't they talk in direct-to-the-point sentences?

Re: toward or towards

I thought there was a grammatical rule to this. I never really found out until now that there's none. :)

Re: there is VS. has

No, no, only the first one is correct. It is raining (when saying the rain is still going on as of the moment.) The second one -- It is rained -- is wrong. Instead you say "It was raining" when you...

Re: AH! so many beginner students!

Hmn, is there a way to divide the class into at least two? I find 30 way too many. Some of the kids will be needing one-on-one moments, and I can't imagine how you can do that with 30 kids.

Re: Difficult Class!

Basing from their age (20-something), then I assume studying English is a choice they made themselves. These people are not kids anymore, so if they are not interested, why enroll in the first place?...

Re: My difficult class

Well maybe applying a reward system will get them more interested. Students (especially the spoiled ones) can be competitive with each other, so a little healthy competition among them might be a...

Re: Teaching 4-5 year olds

What can I say? dk1 has said it all. I have to say that the tips she listed in here are indeed very helpful and effective.

Re: Play line learning and rehearsal

I couldn't think of any way to make the play rehearsal it into a game. But maybe you can make it into a little party? Like prepare some food and certain treats for them to enjoy during brief breaks?

Re: Discussion topics for high school class?

I agree with bread baker and Dave-B.

teeners love to talk about fashion, girl/boy relationships, their celebrity crushes, social media, video games, their favorite TV shows.

Re: Wh-Questions

The good thing about teaching in the Kindergarten level is that you can make up easy and even ridiculous games and kids will enjoy them. You can be a little bit creative and make up games yourself,...

Re: here is a good song for weather teaching

I use "Eensy Weensy Spider" all the time. Then there's "Let the sun shine." :)

Re: Who or what?

Yep, I agree with bread_baker's explanation. You only use WHO if you refer to a person or to a known entity.

Re: Turn your class into a video game!

Do you think this kind of strategy will also work for the much older students? I am sure the younger ones will be enthusiastic, but how about those in their... say...30s?

Re: students who don't want to be there

I am wondering why these 2 students are in your class in the first place when they don't seem interested to learn.

Re: "Why is Jesus an ESL Taboo?"

I think this thread should answer the question why Jesus is a taboo topic. The topic can branch out to a lot of arguments and can end in a heated debate.

However, I never really knew it was "taboo"...

Re: Teaching adults of various levels

Since the set-up is informal, you can ask each one of them which area in learning English they'd like to improve. Ask them for particular occasions or scenarios when they have experienced it really...

Re: Is it me or them?

I have had students like these, and I although I know it's not me at fault -- because a lot of my students learn quite fast too -- I have to let go of classes with them. Because I realized that, as...

Re: How to Teach a Quiet Class and Make the Lessons Interesting?

So you are teaching students who are still in their teens. In my experience, teenagers love certain topics -- like love, boy-girl relationships, fads, teeny bopper TV shows, movie stars etc. Focus...
