The difference in age has a few of issues:
1. The sts rate of learning is different (very different between 7 and 17 year olds).

Re: How do you determine whether a class was a success?

If the sts can remember what was taught in the next lesson
If you end the lesson and the sts plead with you to keep going

I like The higher 'Let's Go' series just because of the level of the sts. I do modify the book - mainly by changing the American English.

Re: help.....

I LOVE teaching animals to young learners, it's really fun. Use plenty of TPR. For example teaching 'bee' - introduce with a soft toy or a puppet (or a flashcard). Drill the word and sentence...

Re: what are your goals with readings

I also use "rub out and remember" activities.

Basically, you have a conversation (with two or more characters), which is written on the board. Get students to read through the conversation. Each...

Re: what are your goals with readings

A reading?
Are the students reading to you? or...
Are you reading to the students and getting them to extract information?

Sorry, I've never come across "a reading" before....

Re: Managing large classrooms

Do you provide lesson notes for the students when they miss a class? I have helped slower students improve by giving them extra homework. The problem is getting them to complete it!
